Abrasion-Free Take Off and Strong Retarder with Heavy Loads

Mercedes-Benz's exclusive Turbo Retarder Clutch is offered in the heavy transportation segment. The Clutch combines hydrodynamic clutch with primary retarder inside a single structure. Compared to its competition, this strong feature gives superior advantages for the heavy transportation segment for precise take offs and manoeuvres on very low speeds and heavy loads.

When compared to a torque converter, thanks to its abrasion-free torque transfer and heat balance, the vehicle offers maximum vehicle usability on even the heaviest loads, frequent stop and go situations, long and difficult manoeuvres and very low speeds. This lets it offer high levels of comfort.

It always takes off through the hydraulic clutch and following the take-off, the dry clutch is activated to significantly improve the lifetime of the dry clutch through an abrasion-free ride. While the system prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards on ramps with heavy loads, it allows forward and backward movement at the required sensitivity using just the gas pedal, without pressing the brakes. Thanks to its integrated primary retarder, it provides maximum braking force even at very low speeds as well as a retarder function even on reverse gear. With an average 1100 rev/min, turbo retarder clutch can ensure take off even with the heaviest loads, providing significant fuel efficiency.
