Through the newly established Autonomous Technology Group, it is planned to achieved the goal of the Daimler Truck Group to deliver the advanced autonomous trucks (SAE level 4) in 10 years. To achieve this, Daimler Truck Group announced its investment in excess of 500 million euros at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. In commercial vehicles, Tier 4 means the next step after Tier 2 in terms of increasing safety and efficiency as well as productivity.
USA is the Prior Market for Advanced Autonomous Driving
As of 1 June 2019, Peter Vaughan Schmidt, President of the Strategy Unit at Daimler Truck Group, has begun to lead this new global and interdepartmental organization. Schmidt has 15 years of experience in the industry and was responsible for developing the Daimler Truck Group's strategy for autonomous vehicles in his previous position. Peter Vaughan Schmidt said that; "With the Autonomous Technology Group, we combine our global experts and their vast knowledge with autonomous transport. In the first phase, we will focus on highly autonomous driving scenarios in defined areas and between defined centers in the USA. In doing so, we will work in close contact with our customers, whose jobs are suitable for our autonomous driving practice. We will not only develop the relevant technology, but will also establish the necessary operational infrastructure and network."
